Aaron A. Weaver, 32, was raised in Citrus County and was a graduate of Citrus High School and Central Florida Community College. An OH-58 Kiowa helicopter pilot with the 82d Airborne Division, he was killed in Iraq on January 8, 2004. The Black Hawk medevac helicopter in which he was a passenger was brought down by fire from insurgents. Aaron left behind his wife, Nancy, a 1-year-old daughter and a young stepson.
Aaron was a cancer survivor and a 12-year Army veteran. Prior to being appointed a Warrant Officer, he served as an Army Ranger. While an Army Ranger, he was awarded the Bronze Star for Valor for his heroic actions in the Mogadishu, Somalia rescue mission made famous by the movie "Black Hawk Down". Aaron was a valiant warrior and dedicated patriot.
2004 Citizen of the Year
On January 9, 2005 Aaron was posthumously named as the 2004 Citrus County Chronicle Citizen of the Year.
In selecting him as Citizen of the Year, the Chronicle Editorial Board noted that during his life Weaver exemplified the best of who we are as a nation. In honoring his memory, the Editorial Board also honors all the other men and women who have risked or sacrificed their lives in the service of our country.
Aaron received the Citizen of the Year honor, not only because he made the ultimate sacrifice for our community and our country, but also because he was an incredible role model for other young people.
